Kung Fu San Soo Master Ron Gatewood made a final post on his website about the San Soo vs. Muay Thai lie. I left this message for him to answer:
Mr. Gatewood,
*Just to let you know the picture for this epilogue post is of a Pradal Serey (Cambodian) fight not a Muay Thai (Thailand) fight.
In your opinion, why did Larry Wikel make this complete absurd lie up?
Did he honestly think he could get away with saying Muay Thai fighters would be scared of fighting san soo guys?
Muay Thai fighters, especially from the 1970's would not ever be afraid of fighting anyone from any style! The story claims the Thais couldn't get approval to come to the USA. Hell, if the story was true (which we know it isn't) Thailand would have gladly flown the San Soo guys to Thailand and held the fights in Lumpinee Stadium or Rajadamnern Stadium. Why? If the Thais actually saw San Soo demonstrated they would gladly accept the challenge and want to show off another victory for Muay Thai in the Stadiums.
Didn't Larry Wikel know that Thailand has accepted and made challenge fights from other martial arts styles (Japan, China, Holland, France, etc.) way before the Gracie Family ever did?
Did Larry Wikel know anything about Muay Thai before this article was ever written?
He should have done some research first before he decided to make up this lie. The time period Larry Wikel mentions this event occurring was the beginning of the Golden Era of Muay Thai. No Muay Thai fighters would have been scared of fighting. Still to this day, the Thais live up to the reputation for accepting fights.
Anyway, it was too the benefit of Kung Fu San Soo this event never even came close to happening. Why? The Muay Thai Fighters would have destroyed any and all of the San Soo guys. If San Soo guys (under Larry Wikel) couldn't beat Kickboxers in 1975 at the Culver City Arena event then they would not last against Muay Thai fighters from Thailand.
Best Regards.
SP Danny
I don't know if he'll answer, but the reason for me leaving my comment on his website was to pretty much call out the San Soo community for a lie made up by one of their own. Bottom line, Muay Thai is superior and back then and even to this day no Muay Thai fighter is scared of San Soo or any martial art. Very few styles exist that are really good for striking and the ones recommended on this blog are the very few.

SPENCER HERE; GREAT COMMENTS. I SAW THE TOTAL BEATDOWN OF LARRYS SO CALLED FIGHTERS AT. THE CULVET CITY EVENT IN 1975. IT WAS A TERRIBLE BEATDOWN. TWO OF WIKELS FIGHTETS WERE BLACKBELTS, ONE YELLOW AND TWO GREEN. 3 WETE KNOCKED OUT. ALL FIVE LOST. IT WAD A LOW LEVEL EVENT. I WAS THEIR. IT WAS A HUMILIATION. I WOULD LIKE LARRU. TO EXPLAIN THE BEATDOWN. HE. TRAINED THEM.
ReplyDeleteI BELIVE THE PEOPLE INVOLVED ON THE TALKS FIGITED ALL THE SAN SOO GUYS WOULD YAKE A BAD BEATING AND IT WOULD END QUOCK AND THE AUDIENCE WOULD BE PISSED. DAVE CARTER TOLD ME IT WOULD HAVE BEEN A TERRIBLE BEATDOWN. EVERY TOP MASTET IN THE ART KNEW DAVE CARTER. A REAL FIGHTER. GIL SALAS HAD TROUBLE BEATING SAMMY PACE IN FIVE ROUNDS IN ABOUT 1976 AT THE OLYMPIC AUDITORIUM. LARRY AND SHARON ARE GREAT PEOPLE WITH EVEN GREATET IMAGINATIONS.
ReplyDeleteSPENCET HERE; I WILL PUT UP 5000.00 TO ANY SAN SOO FIGHTET THAT CAN BEAT A TOP LOCAL THAI FIGHTET AT A LOCAL GY M IN THAI TOWN. WE CAN HAVE THE FIGHT AT A LOCAL GYM. SEND THIS OVET TO RON GATEWOOD. LET'S DO IT.

ReplyDeleteWE COULD TAKE SOME TOP SAN SOO MAZTERS TO THE GRACIE GYM IN TORANCE AND CHALLEGE SOME OF THEIR TOP BELTS.
ReplyDeleteWhere the art can be helpful is basic self defense sit u auto n s for average persons. Not everyone h ad the h health. Or. Stamina for elite fighting arts. SAN SOO IS ok for t h e people that are not suited for the. Elite fighting art s. We should not be making SAN SOO out to be this special fighting art that is the best. That is mythology.
ReplyDeleteSO AS A SAN SOO SUPPORTET I SEE SAN SOO HAVING SOME APPLICATIO N S FOR PEOPLE UNABLE TO PRACTICE ELITE FIGHTING SYSTEMS. THEIR. IS. TOO MUCH ELIPHANT SHIT GOING AROUND MAKING SAN SOO AN ELITE ART. IT IS NOT.
