I don't believe I have talked about how a person becomes a Grandmaster in San Soo, but I have talked about how a person earns the rank of Master (it's not hard at all) and the belt levels in san soo.
If I remember correctly this is how you earn the rank of Grandmaster in San Soo:
1) be a master in san soo.
2) taught san soo for over 30 years.
3) taught your son or daughter (who is 18 years old) to black belt level.
4) taught a grandchild (who is 18 years old) to black belt level.
Besides Jimmy H. Woo achieving Grandmaster status, a man named Kenneth Hensley achieved the status. Here is the video of the man:

That's it. That's how you get to become a Grandmaster. All the rank levels have been talked about in this blog.
Anyway, below is a link to one of my favorite Muay Thai documentaries ever!
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TzZdDrrTHQE
I believe this Muay Thai documentary is one of the best ever! It truly shows how fighters train and live and what Muay Thai is about and how its so superior. A fancy uniform doesn't make you a fighter, or how you salute, or obsessed with ranking and status, or your claim to being so superior to others in a martial art after so many years of training (people obsessed with that type of stuff are fucking douchebags as far as I'm concerned). Neither do fancy gyms/schools/equipment make a difference in ones ability. If you want to fight and get good at it you'll find a way with what you have access to and make it happen!
There are way too many camps in Thailand that don't have access to fancy equipment or in a clean environment. However, there is not one san soo school or san soo master that could hold ground against these Muay Thai camps. Not all martial arts are equal, some are better than others!

ReplyDeleteON THE question of the Thai FIGHTERS having a challenge match. GIL Salas who was one of the proposed participants in the MUY THAI FIGHT told me personally that this did not. Take place. Dave cartet who I WAD good friends with until I lost contact with just a few years ago told me that it never happened. Larry Wikel and Sharon WIKEL ate the dearest people you will ever meet in your life. I know their were negotiations for the MUY THAI FIGHT. I know David Chow used to come by LARRYS Fairfax studio at 1051 S. Fairfax. He wad a 5th Dan in Judo. Larry used to let him wear his BLACKBELT. I believe this was all happening around 1973. My father loaned Larry about 4500 to 5000 to open the studio. Could have been a little less. My dad told me that it wad a great deal for him and always spoke very highly of Larry and Sharon until the day he died Oct 20th 2007. GIL Salas and David CARTET told me that it did not happen. I actually WAD surprised that it is even an issue. GIL WENT ON TO WIN THE CALIFORNIA SYATE LIGHT HEAVYWEIGJT KICKBOXING TITLE AT THE OLYMPIC A FEW YEARS LATET. HE WON BY DECISION IN 5 ROUNFS OVET SAMMY. PACE. GIL WAD TOTALLY EXHAUSTED IN THE END. HE DID DOMINATE. DAVE CARTER SAID TO ME THAT THE MUY THAI FIGHTERS WOULD HAVE. BEAT EVRY SAN SOO GUY WHATEVET THE RULES WERE. DAVE WAD A HARD MAN. TWO TIME GOLDEN GLOVES MIDDLEQEIGHT IN LOS ANGELES. HE WAS TRAINING. TO GO TO THE OLYMPICS BUT GOT KNOCKED OUT IN A REGIONAL BOUT. HE WAS SIGNED TO A PRO CONTRACT TO FIGHT OUT OF HONOLULU WITH A STABLEMATE ADOLF PRUITT A FORMER TOP JUNIOR WELTERWEIGHT. DAVE WAS 225 AND SOLID. C ONNECTED GUY. SOME SAN SOO GUY GOT SMART WITH HIM AT JIMMYS. HE HIT THE GUY ONCE. GUY ALMOST DIED GOING TO THE HOSPITAL. ASK ANY OLD SAN SOO MASTER. HE THE SAN SOO GUYS WOULD GET DESTROYED.
I MENT TO SAY GIL DID NOT DOMINATE. HE BARELY HUNG ON TO WIN A DECISION.
ReplyDeleteBOTH G IL SALAS AND DAVE CARYET TOLD ME THAT THE PTELIMINARY MATCH DID NOT TAKE PLACE. EVEN IF IT DID; WHAT. DID IT P R OVE. THESR WOULD HAVE BEEN LOCAL MUYVTHAI FIGHTERS. NOT CHAMPIONS.
ReplyDeleteWH E N. RAUL RIES WAD CHALLENGED AT HIS STUDIO BY DAVID GERMAN A KEMPO GUY HE BACKED DOWN. HE WAS TROUBLED BY IT AND WENT TO JIMMY. DAVE CARTER HEARD ABOUT IT AND WENT OVER TO DAVE GERMANS PLACE AND CHALLENGED HIM AND GERMAN DECLINED. HE CHALLENGED GETMAN ANY WAY HE WANTED. STRAIGHT UP OR SPARRING. GETMAN WAD SHITTIN HIS PANTS. RAUL R IES KNOWS IT HAPPENED. RAUL IS GREAT. JIMMY LOVED HAVING DAVID AROUND.
ReplyDeleteTHIS WAS WHEN RAUL HAD HIS COVINA STUDIO. DAVE GETMAN HAD A COVINA STUDIO.
ReplyDeleteDAVE ALSO TOLD ME TJAT JIMMY TOLD RAUL THAT YOU DO NOT NEED TO BE A TOUGH GUY. TO TEACH SAN SOO.
ReplyDeleteI WOULD BET YOU THAT EVERY COACH IN THE NBA AT LEAST PLAYED SMALL COLLEGE BASKETBALL. PROBABLY HALF HAVE PLAYED AT THE NBA LEVEL.
ReplyDeleteYOU CANNOT SHOOT 25 FOOTERS WITHOUT ANYONE GUARDING YOU AND CALL YOUSELF A BADKETBALL PLAYET. YOU JAVE TO JAVE SONEONE GUARDING YOU. SAME IN SAN SOO. THEY HAVE NO RESISTANT OPPONENT.
